Harkin creates history as Dundee United win SWPL 2
Tammy Harkin 'buzzing' as she becomes the club's all-time top goalscorer
Tammy Harkin could not hide her joy after she made history as Dundee United won the SWPL 2 title on Sunday.
Harkin, 30, scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 rout of Kilmarnock at Rugby Park to move ahead of Laurie Ross as Dundee United’s all-time top goalscorer.
Danni McGinley also netted, with United learning they were champions before a ball was kicked due to Glasgow Women’s 2-0 defeat to St Johnstone earlier that day.
“I got the hat-trick, I broke the record, so yeah I’m absolutely buzzing,” Harkin told Anyone’s Game.
The win moved unbeaten Dundee United 23 points clear and earned promotion to the top flight for the first time in their history.
“We found out on the way through we won the league, we were absolutely buzzing from that,” said Harkin, who joined the club from Forfar Farmington in 2018.
“We were thinking going into this game ‘We need to make sure we keep our standards up’. I’m just delighted, we were nice and comfortable.
“I saw the free-kick and I saw no-one was marking me, so I’m like ‘Cassie [Cowper], Cassie, give me the ball, I’m on a hat-trick.’ Thankfully she did and it’s gone in.”
Harkin now wants to see her side accomplish another feat in their final five games.
“We want to go up unbeaten, we want to be the first team in this league to never be beaten and go up promoted,” she said.
