Fran Alonso: Scotland will bounce back from loss to 'World Cup favourites Spain'
The Celtic head coach says Spain were 'unplayable' in Tuesday's 8-0 drubbing
Scotland are still favourites to finish second in their World Cup qualifying group despite their 8-0 humbling on Tuesday night, according to Celtic’s Spanish coach Fran Alonso.
Managed by fellow Spaniard Pedro Martinez Losa, the Scots suffered a chastening loss in Seville days after scrambling to a 1-1 draw at home to Ukraine.
Scotland, though, remain second in the Group B with three games to go.
“It was a tough game for Scotland, the important thing is to pick themselves up,” Alonso told Anyone’s Game.
“They [Spain] are unplayable at the moment”
“It was a great game, I think Spain are outstanding, for me they are favourites to win the tournament, they are a different level”
Alonso, whose side take on Glasgow City in the SWPL Cup final on Sunday, had conflicting emotions watching the game as his country took on a Scotland side that featured Celtic’s Tegan Bowie and Kelly Clark in the squad.
He said: “On the one hand I want Scotland to do well, because I’m here and I have two players there. On the other hand I’m Spanish and I love how they play”
“Credit to the way Scotland defended, Lee Alexander was quite good in goal. At the end of the day they are still the favourites to finish second, make the play-off, and hopefully we will see Scotland at the tournament”
