SWPL 2: Hamilton stun Aberdeen while Mark Kirk leaves Queen's Park
League leaders Aberdeen fall to defeat to leave promotion race wide open
Hamilton Accies stunned Aberdeen to keep alive their promotion hopes as they beat the SWPL 2 table toppers 2-1 at Cormack Park.
Goals from MT Gardiner and Kathleen McGovern cut Aberdeen’s lead at the top to three points, although they have a game in hand on the chasing pack.
Accies win keeps them within two points of second-place Dundee United, who beat St Johnstone 2-0.
“We’re so happy to get the win and keep our season going,” Accies head coach Gary Doctor told the Hamilton website.
“It was important we won as it means Aberdeen need to keep winning and they’ll now play the teams around us. We’ve given ourselves a chance and that’s all we could have asked for.”
Partick Thistle thumped Stirling University 6-0 to stay level on points with Hamilton, and it’s now a very clear four-way battle for the two promotion spots with three games to go.
Elsewhere, Mark Kirk announced his departure from Queen’s Park after their 3-0 loss to Kilmarnock.
The Spiders are second bottom, one point behind Boroughmuir Thistle who drew 1-1 with Glasgow Women.
“I am proud of the achievements we have made; from winning promotion, creating an identity within the women’s team and understanding the long term vision,” said Kirk.
