Motherwell 2-3 Forfar Farmington: Kevin McGreskin 'relieved' at first win
Kevin McGreskin was “relieved” as Forfar Farmington moved up to fifth in SWPL 1 with a thrilling 3-2 win over Motherwell at the Penny Cars Stadium.
After a goalless first half; Lisa Ryan, Cassie Cowper and Alana Bruce all scored for the visitors, with Abby Callaghan netting for the home side.
But when Motherwell’s Jordan McLintock made it 3-2 it set up a nervy finish, before Forfar eventually held on to leapfrog Hibernian in the table.
“Delighted with three points,” McGreskin told Anyone’s Game after his first competitive game in charge.
“It would have been nicer if I could have relaxed a little bit towards the end of the game. Motherwell were putting us under a lot of pressure.”
Motherwell had the better of the first half with Keala McDonald-Nguah (twice) and Callaghan testing Lauren Perry in the Forfar goal
Forfar’s best chance of the half came when Khym Ramsay smothered at the feet of Cheryl Kilcoyne as she looked destined to score.
But after the break, Forfar took the lead.
Ryan lost her marker at a corner with some fine movement and nodded home her first goal for the club from close range.
The home side rallied, hitting back straight away.
McDonald-Nguah, a constant threat all game, forced a corner that resulted in the ball falling to Callaghan, who finished well from the edge of the box.
And the hosts had a strong shout for a penalty waved away at 1-1 before Forfar went 2-1 ahead.
Cowper lofted in a free-kick which Ramsay failed to hold and to the goalkeeper’s dismay it rolled into the empty net.
Forfar looked to have sealed all three points when some indecision in the home defence led to Bruce nipping in before Ramsay and slotting home her side’s third.
McLintock gave the home side hope with a fine volley from the edge of the box, but a couple of half chances after that fizzled out.
