'I forgot Celtic only had 10' - Izzy Atkinson

Celtic beat Glasgow City 3-2 after extra-time to clinch the Scottish Women's Cup

Celtic’s Scottish Women’s Cup final goal hero Izzy Atkinson admitted she was in shock when the chance arrived to score the winner, as her depleted side beat Glasgow City 3-2 after extra-time at Tynecastle.

The 20-year-old wrote her name into the Parkhead club’s history books by scoring the late extra-time winner that sealed a domestic cup double for Fran Alonso’s side.

Celtic, who were pegged back twice by City, were a player down in the first half after Jodie Bartle’s red card.

“I couldn’t be any more happy”, Atkinson told Anyone’s Game. “It was just special.

“I took one touch and I saw there was no defender, and I was like ‘oh my god, I’m one-on-one right now’.

“And I just saw her legs open and took my chance. I couldn’t believe it went in.

“I couldn’t breathe. I was on the very bottom and I couldn’t breathe because there was so many of the girls on top of me. But it was special, not just for myself to feel it but for all the girls and all the fans to feel it. It means so much to me to be able to give them that.”

Jenna Clark and Lauren Davidson cancelled out strikes from Shen Mengyu and Charlie Wellings in an enthralling final in front of a crowd of 4,345, a record for a women’s domestic final in Scotland.

“People don’t realise how much the fans help to know that they are in the background,” said the former Shelbourne player.

“To know that if you are on the pitch and you’re tired, you convince yourself ‘Nah I’m not tired, there’s people supporting us’ and it gives you adrenaline that they don’t realise. They are part of this goal.

“We had a lot of chances. I don’t know if everyone else agrees but with 10 players you wouldn’t have noticed that.

“From watching the game I felt like we had 11, I forgot we even had 10 so I thought we done really well.

“We didn’t sit back as much as most teams that would have, we had a lot of chances and obviously I took the one that we needed so thank god.

“I’ve only signed since February 2021 and to think that the club hasn’t had more trophies is insane. Since I’ve came it’s a club where we want to be first. We want to be winning the most amount of things and we’ve done that.

“So it baffles me that it’s only happening now as we are some team and it’s only gong to go higher and higher.”
